The Classic & The Modern: "Ogo Bodhu Sundori" reinvented
Kolkata, 12th May 2010: "Not a patch on the old film" is likely to be the common response to most remakes, perhaps without too much thought going into the opinion. But what sets the new adaptation of the 1980 classic "Ogo Bodhu Sundori" apart is its tenacious adherence to the original theme. The plot digresses a bit to accommodate a few twists and turns adding an extra zing to the storyline. The Original Soundtrack of the evergreen classic in its new avatar was launched today in the presence of Mr. Sourav Ganguly, former Indian cricket captain.
Directed by Sunando Mitra and produced jointly by D Silva Production, Rose Valley Films and Brand Value Communications, the album was launched under the banner of INRECO. The film introduces Babul Supriyo, the eminent singer, in his first full-fledged lead alongwith Sreelekha Mitra, Monami Ghosh, Arnab Banerjee, Sabitri Chatterjee, Haradhan Bandopadhyay, Kharaj Mukherjee and others. The laugh riot that breaks loose when real meets reel life is what makes the film so refreshingly intriguing.
Bappi Lahiri, the original composer of the 1980 super-hit film Ogo Bodhu Sundori starring the Legendary Uttam Kumar, has re-created those all time super-hit songs once again for this film in the voices of Babul Supriyo, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal and Anwesha. The lyrics, originally written by Bibhuti Mukherjee, remain the same.
The songs that have been included in this laugh riot are "Ei to Jibon", "Tui Joto Phool" and "Narichoritro Bejay Jotil". Babul Supriyo effortlessly dabbles with Kishore Kumar classics "Ei To Jibon" and "Naricharitro" bringing out the humour content. His finely nuanced voice pays a faithful tribute to the inimitable maestro-Kishore Kumar. Alka Yagnik, in her chirpy self, animates the peppy Asha Bhosle hit "Tui Joto Phool". "Akashbhora Surjo Tara" dominates the narrative at two crucial junctures of the film. The full-throated voice of Babul Supriyo shines through the Tagorean number. The female version encapsulates the unmatched precocity of Anwesha's voice in all its tenderness. Babul and Shreya Ghoshal team up for the eponymously titled song "Ogo Bodhu Sundori" and their duet promises to be a huge hit.

A much-awaited album after years of seclusion
Kolkata, 11th May 2010: "Byatha" a collection of Tagore Songs by Promit Sen was released today by living legends Suchitra Mitra and Dwijen Mukhopadhyay.
Promit's mellifluous baritone voice, reminiscent of his legendary father Late Sagar Sen, brings back a flood of memories. Promit's remarkable journey as an illustrious torch-bearer of Rabindrasangeet in its pristine form, acted as a bulwark against frivolous and oft disastrous experimentation entering the hallowed portals of Rabindrasangeet rendition. Promit's near decade-long sabbatical following his tumultuous, dysfunctional marriage was witness to many changes in the realm of Tagore song rendition. Infact, with Promit reaching the nadir of despair, his precocious talent almost went unnoticed after that as he deliberately marooned himself from the mainstream. While it was always a foregone conclusion that Promit would be a Rabindrasangeet singer, hardly anybody knows that Promit has a formidable background in dhrupad from none-other-than Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar. His extensive table and piano training under the tutelage of Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh and Mukti Banerjee shaped up his diverse musical sensibilities.
Over the decades, Rabindrasangeet as it were, was cloistered within a shell of austerity in rendition, gayaki and accompaniments due to an all pervasive puritanist fear of nouveau interpretative attempts permeating and compromising the sacrosanct 'swaralipi'. The compositions did remain unscathed, but with time the young had begun eschewing Rabindrasangeet due to the imposed rigidity. At this critical juncture, with regulations falling off and musicians rushing to popularize the eternal Tagore songs, Promit's standout solo album BYATHA is a welcome break to his long hiatus and a gift to be cherished by the numerous Tagore enthusiasts in his 150th birth anniversary.
BYATHA is path-breaking. The listener instantly connects to Promit's soulful rendition of the 12 immortal Tagore songs, thematically chosen by the artist. Promit as an artist has undergone a cathartic transformation. His renditions portray pain as an experiential, transformative emotion. The amazing rendition of "Tar Hatey Chhilo" depicts pain as the real transformative wealth, priceless compared to the transience of laughter and mirth that vanish in no time. Promit's lingering, melancholic rendition of "Amar E Poth" brings forth the crisis of identity and a gut wrenching feeling of rootlessness experienced in today's day and age of speed living. The subtle anguish of "Din Porey Jaye Din" finds a rare mellow tremulousness in Promit's voice while the rendition of "Jetey Jetey Ekla Pothey" portrays the transformative turbulence-both internal and external with deep conviction. Endowed with a full-throated voice Promit has applied fine-grained nuances in songs like "Prabhu Toma Lagi" and "Daya Diye Hobe Go" to delineate myriad emotions from solitude, hopelessness to divine omnipresence. Promit makes use of guttural articulations, portamento or meends in profusion to etch out the inherent thematic gravity of Tagorean Brahmosangeets like "Nishidino Chaho Re" and "Nutono Praano Dao". The album also has its share of the oft-heard classics like "Amar Raat Pohalo", "Je Raatey Mor Duaarguli", "Tomra Ja Bolo Tai Bolo".
Promit has handled each of the songs with dexterity and aplomb, being delightfully original in his rendering and phrasing, but not for a moment digressing from the sacrosanct swaralipi. The inherent subdued nature of Tagorean compositions never gets marred because of the unparalleled restraint displayed in the vocal rendition as well as of the accompaniments. Pratyush Banerjee, Rahul Chatterjee, Subhayu Sen Majumdar, Biplab Mandal, Durbadal Chattopadhyay-classical instrumentalists in their own right have left an indelible imprint on the songs by arranging a seamless interplay of musical instruments like flute, violin, tabla, keyboard etc. etc. The use of conch-shells in "Nutono Praano Dao" creates a brilliantly evocative ambience.
For Rabindrasangeet aficionados BYATHA will turn out to be a cherished possession in their CD shelves and a must have album for the connoisseur Rabindrasangeet listener.

"Vibgyor Vehicles" breaks ground in Madhya Pradesh with "Gallop" and "Shark"
Indore, 26th April 2010: Bike-evangelists could well chronicle a story on Gallop's meteoric rise to fame; such was the unanimous verdict of the people since the inception of Vibgyor Vehicles. Madhya Pradesh, till now was an unexplored territory for the company. But with the launch of the 100cc flagship bike "Gallop" and the 150 cc Shark, Vibgyor Vehicles has forayed into the state promisingly. The speedster "Shark" was recently unveiled at the 10th Delhi Auto Expo at a glitzy launch attended by none-other-than the former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly.
The 100 cc Gallop has been specially designed for navigating through the bumpy Indian roads. Priced at Rs.29,990/- Gallop will offer customers a value proposition much superior to the currently overpriced and under featured 100cc products. "We have an edge over the other varieties in this segment due to our affordable rate and superior features, this is one overriding factor which nobody can reject at the outset", said Mr.Mrigen Banerjee, VP, Vibgyor Vehicles. The line-up available in black, blue, red and grey is all poised to hit the roads in Madhya Pradesh. The alloy-wheel model has up-to-date mobile indicator, gear indicator, tachometer, self-start and battery operated headlights lodged within it.
Powered with a 150 cc engine, Shark is aerodynamically crafted to woo speed-fanatic youths in droves. Luminously painted in red-black and yellow-black combinations, the bike has a character that is quintessentially exuberant! The aluminum silencer and stainless steel fasteners enhance the look of the bike.
It took a greenhorn like "Gallop" to destroy the gratuitous myth that the Tier I and II cities are bastions of only the established brands. Now that the Vibgyor brand has carved out its own niche, success seems to be inevitable for Shark. People have already started raving about the price of the new model-which has been kept deliberately at Rs 50,990 to suit pockets of all economic brackets.
Seldom do we come across people who decide to make footprints rather than follow them. It was his candid vision that led Raja Bhadra, CMD, Vibgyor Group to diversify into bike manufacturing from the existing domains like PVC Pipe Manufacturing, Retail Market, Real Estate, Educational Institutes, Merchandise Export, Cement Manufacturing, Computers and Software.
Successive launches of 110 cc "Persona", 125 cc "Hunter", utility scooters and 200 cc bikes are in the pipeline. Now that the dealership network has expanded manifold across India, the production volume has increased likewise. Moreover consignments have been shipped to Bangladesh and talks are on with dealers in Nepal too. Even the far-flung areas of Africa are being targeted for gaining strongholds there. Vibgyor Vehicles is manufacturing and developing its products on Indian soil at a highly modernized factory at Dhulagori, Howrah in West Bengal, which is hard to come across. To manage these escalating operations, Vibgyor has acquired 35 bighas of land at Dankuni for construction of its second factory and work is under progress too.
About Vibgyor Group: Vibgyor group of companies is headquartered in Kolkata, is a fast growing diversified organization driven by performance ethic and dedication towards total customer satisfaction. Bluechip charts blueprint for Esplanade
Durgapur, 17th April 2010: The unhurried pace of life at Ranigunj will soon pick up the tumultuous momentum of a metro city as Esplanade, the international standard mall nears completion. Thanks to the developer Bluechip and Ranigunj Municipality, the proposed mall in a first-ever PPP model, will make a pioneering effort by housing big brands alongside local traders and businessmen.
The detailed blueprint was drawn by Mr. Ritwik Das, MD, Bluechip Projects Pvt. Ltd. today in the honorable presence of dignitaries Mr. Bansogopal Chowdhury, Chairman, ADDA & MP, Asansol, Mr. Runu Dutta, Honorable Chairman, Ranigunj Municipality and Mr. Anup Mitra, Vice Chairman, Ranigunj Municipality.
"Ranigunj seems to be an ideal location for developing a mall. People here, have the purchasing power. They have big-time lifestyle aspirations which get hindered midway due to the absence of a proper destination. And when malls are springing up everywhere, residents of Ranigunj shouldn't feel deprived. This was the idea with which we started the project" said Mr. Ritwik Das, MD, Bluechip Projects Pvt. Ltd.
Esplanade traditionally means the nucleus of a city characterized by a flurry of activities Bluechip and Ranigunj Municpality are recreating the hub of Ranigunj with "Esplanade". After its completion the area will become the best hang-out zone in the city for all ages.
Scheduled to be completed in April 2011, the mall for the first time will promote socio-economic development in the region armed with the motto "Business for All". It will accommodate big brands in the ground floor. Simultaneously the mall would reserve the first and second floor for local traders and businessmen from the proximity zone. There is a popular perception that the footfalls at malls are restricted to upper-class people. But the inclusive policy will help in bringing people from all economic stratas-elite to the middle and lower middle class to the mall.
Entertainment options will be galore at the mall with the 3rd floor exclusively devoted to food courts, restaurants and gaming and e-zones. The 4th floor will have banks and a full-service banquet hall. "There is a long-felt need for a proper banquet hall at Ranigunj. Infact this is the precise reason, which has forced us to arrange this press conference at Durgapur, although the mall will be at Ranigunj" said Mr. Das.
In order to contain the possible rush of people, parking lanes managed by professionals would be designed. For the shop-owners there would be reserved parking spaces. An adjacent land has been earmarked for development in the 2nd phase which will have an assortment of multiplexes and food courts.

Be a part of Noboborsher Bhoj Baithak at 6 Ballygunge Place
Kolkata, 8th April 2010: Good food laid out is an aesthetic experience, one of the joys of living. Careful shopping, fresh ingredients and unhurried approach are things to reach the goal. But of course there is one more ingredient: love- one’s love for food which 'bangalis' have in abundance.
Be it "Epaar Bangla" or "Opaar Bangla" the culinary culture is equally affluent and detailed and they get a true focus during the festive seasons. The cuisine has actually evolved through several stages since the pre-Vedic times. Past traditions have imbued the master chefs with an understanding of both the culinary and medicinal properties of food. People from different nations visiting Eastern India have enriched the food culture here, introducing new ingredients, methods and culinary techniques. Over time, layer upon layer of influences have been laid down on this base.
To many, Bengali cuisine represents a food tradition in its entirety. They get flummoxed when we talk about Epaar Bangla and Opaar Bangla. Only the gourmets can point out the subtleties in their taste, flavor, ingredients and recipe. Though apparently similar, they have different legacies running through. Poila Baishakh, being an important festival in the Bengali calendar on two sides of the border, is celebrated with much fanfare. 6 Ballygunge Place, the premium Bengali eatery has conceptualized a special food festival Noboborsher Bhoj Baithak amalgamating the distinct culinary traditions.
A flawless Bengali meal begins with a generous dose of "appayan" or "greeting the guests". As you enter the restaurant after spending hours in the sweltering heat, it plays the perfect host by placing a glass of Pudina Shorbot to cool you off. In the starter section, you'll discover two authentic elicacies that you almost thought had faded away—doi echor and puti machher kawra bhaja.
In the main course get spoilt by a gamut of options ranging from tetul pata elish, sheer malaikari, panch phoron murgi, roshun mangsho and morich mangsho. The dessert section boasts of the eternal favorite sewaier payesh.
Bangladeshi or Opaar Bangla tradition displays a fusion of both Islamic and Hindu traditions because of their shared history of prevalence in this country. This influence have given the Bangladeshi kitchen different varieties of 'korma', 'kalia', 'Pulao', 'biriyani', 'porota' and alfresco cooking. Bangladeshi food culture, therefore, has a dual heritage: on the one hand, they have everyday food habits based on indigenous traditions and on the other is the festival food and food for special occasion, influenced by important ideas of food and eating.
West Bengal cuisine is rather an influence of variety of culture that came into being during their invasion. The Portuguese, British, French, Persian, and Mughal cuisine has a great influence on the Bengali palate.
The festival will run from 9th April to 21st April.

Bluechip harbors dreams of placing Bengal football in the world platform through its recently-acquired "child prodigy" Under 15 East Bengal Team
Kolkata, 8th March 2010: Setting an example of Corporate Social Responsibility, BLUECHIP PROJECTS PVT. LTD. formally announced its official endorsement of Under-15 East Bengal Football Team today. Footballers like Baichung Bhutia, Yakubu, Alvito, East Bengal Coach Phillipe De Ridder & Rahim Nabi, the Captain of Senior East Bengal were felicitated to encourage the young talents.
Even a decade ago, one of the favorite past-times of an argumentative Bengali was to engage in endless altercations avowing the relative supremacy of East Bengal over Mohun Bagan and vice versa. Such was the frenzy surrounding football in Bengal! But now those heated discourses on football over noisy slurps of chaa and intermittent puffs of Gold Flake are few and far between. That doesn't necessarily imply that the present generation has lost its intrinsic connection with football. "There's no denying the fact that youths are addicted to football. But with time their choices have shifted to international clubs like Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United and Real Madrid. Time has come for us to figure out how we can reinstate that pride in the minds of the youngsters for Bengal's club football" said Mr. Ritwik Das, MD, BLUECHIP PROJECTS PVT. LTD.
The aim of BLUECHIP PROJECTS PVT. LTD. is to create and recreate a strong supply line from where footballers like Krishanu Dey, Shyam Thapa and PK Banerjee would emerge in the future. "As a corporate house we had a considerable number of offers from premier league clubs for sponsorships of their senior team. But we were dithering, because as a football-crazy Bengali I felt that it's far more important for us to take the onus of grooming a young team by providing the necessary infrastructure, training etc. so that the supply line is created and the Past Glory of Bengal Football can be achieved" said Mr. Das.
The process will also entail a detailed selection procedure whereby talented footballers from even the remotest of districts of West Bengal will be encouraged to enlist their names in the Under 15 East Bengal Team. The formation of an Expert Selection Committee is underway. Designated officers for the development and management of the team will be appointed. Apart from that regular interactions with international clubs will be organized to impart quality training to the budding footballers. The entire operations of international and national clubs will be closely monitored and analyzed to chart a success strategy for the club. Arsenal has set up a benchmark wherein the club's under-15 players are trained in a sustained manner to help them eventually secure a firm place in the senior team. Bluechip is keen on following this example of honing talents right from the beginning.
The team is expected to excel in the upcoming tournaments like Gothia Cup (Under-14) to be held in Sweden and others to be held in Germany, China and Bangkok, under the able stewardship of coaches Swarup Das and Arpan Dey. "Our immediate aim is to qualify for the Manchester United Premier Cup (Under-15 age group). Infact, I would be going there very soon to scrutinize the minutest details of clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United which in turn would be incorporated in our team. Over the last few years the performance of Bengal in Santosh Trophy too has not been satisfactory. We'll have to ensure that these young kids form a winning team in the future, which would salvage the pride of Bengal in Santosh Trophy" affirmed Mr. Das.

Gee Pee and IIPM join forces in anti-terror rally
Kolkata, 5th March 2010: Let's unite again, let's ignite once again. The fire is still alive, let's give it a life again, We've lost many of our own, not again. The fight isn't over yet let's fight for peace again!
The brazen acts of terrorism perpetrated against humanity have left us distraught. There's a common fallacy amongst self-claimed honchos across the society that 'today's youth doesn't care'! Really? Who says youth doesn't care? Yes, they might not always contribute, but that doesn't mean that they don't care. Against a backdrop of societal pusillanimity to combat terrorism, the students of IIPM initiated UNITE TO IGNITE - an anti - terror youth rally. Gee Pee Infotech Pvt Ltd, the manufacturer of the reputed indigenous mobile brand has partnered in this initiative.
"The idea is to unite the youth of the City of Joy to stand against any kind of provocation that aims to dismantle our security, love, brotherhood and social fabric" said Mr. Bijay Agarwal, Managing Director, Gee Pee Infotech Pvt. Ltd. In this pursuit, the foot-march comprising of over 5,000 students & professional from more than 20 colleges and management institutes of Kolkata advanced towards Nandan from Metro Channel (Esplanade).
The basic purpose of a mobile phone is to forge communication among individuals located remotely by bridging silence. Gee Pee, the home-grown mobile manufacturer with over 31 brands in its repertory joined forces with IIPM to put an end to the conspiracy of silence, as this SILENCE, not terrorism, is the biggest ENEMY.
IIPM reached out to many like-minded youth from different reputed academic institutes to extend their support to the cause and most of them have happily come forward. Institutes like St. Xaviers, Bhawanipore Education Society, Techno India, Jogesh Chandra, South Calcutta Girls, Accord Business School, Annex, J. D. Birla & Amity (to name a few) joined IIPM Kolkata students for the cause of UNITE TO IGNITE.
It was indeed a moving spectacle to watch students-the future custodians of tomorrow draped in Gee Pee T Shirts raising their voice against the disquieting numbness that has descended in the collective psyche of society.

"Fairyish Tales" of reality"
Kolkata, 27th February 2010: Fresh on the shelf is a new collection of eight satires titled "Fairyish Tales" by Sumit Mullick. Sparklingly original with a generous dose of magic realism, the book was released today in the presence of Mr. H P Kanoria, Chairman, SREI Foundation, Mr. Mahesh Kumar Verma, Chairman, Indian Professional Service Organization (IPSO), Mr. Rahul Verma, President, Shristi Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd., actor Pallavi Chatterjee and Mr. Debashish Biswas, Vice President of Macmillan.
For the author, a feisty and upright bureaucrat who is presently the Principal Secretary & Chief Protocol Officer, Government of Maharashtra, the brush with fame as a litte rateur is not new. After being in the administrative service for over 25 years, Sumit Mullick wrote his first fiction novel Seducing Pain which earned rave reviews from the critics.
Following the legacy of thinkers like George Orwell, Stanley Kubrick and Oscar Wilde could be a daunting task which the author seamlessly does. During a time when civilization is imperiled by the conquest of violence, the book disarmingly questions the notions of a perfect civilization.
The satires are fairyish, where planets weep, the flowers preen, trees philosophise, stars dance, where the Gods are both more and less than Gods, and where the viruses debate over life and death, and over the basic concept of justice that the few must die, so that the many might live. And, of course, there is the sprinkling of fairyish fairies, ogres and hobgoblins, princes and princesses.
In the first story, the Gods get together and create earth out of vanity, then commit mass suicide out of boredom; themselves confused about their origin and purpose. The second story unfolds as a Prince in the earth urbanizes it and destroys everything beautiful in it, to woo a Princess. In the third story, the only surviving God uses a human messenger to create religion to destroy humanity. In the fourth story, indeed, humans form six nations that
carefully and methodically lead to the destruction of the human species in a holistic saga of world politics. In contrast with the first half of the book where humans are born out of Creation, the second half begins with the re-birth of the humans, this time due to Evolution from viruses.
Here's why this book matters. In the quest for establishing our identities, we created religion, class, geography. In the quest of establishing order we created governance, wealth, power.
Yet, we have forgotten our identity as humans and our natural order as inhabitants of the earth. "Fairyish Tales" doesn't preach how to get here, or what are we supposed to do. But it reminds us of some obvious follies of humanity that all civilizations seem susceptible to; Nationalism over humanity, morality over humanity and finally self-righteousness over understanding.
Mullick's book provides a framework that redefines violence, morality, nationalism, sex, origin, purpose etc; and helps understand the significance of everything that it questions.

SEALDAH GETS A FACELIFT
Kolkata, February 22 The joint venture between Keventer Group and the Future Group comes with the promise of completely changing the busy, bustling, congested and dirty Sealdah.
Riddhi Siddhi Mall Management Private Limited (RSMMPL), the joint venture between The Future Group and The Keventer Group is coming up with a futuristic commercial complex in Sealdah. This is possible, thanks to a unique endeavour of the KMDA and The Keventer Group. The Pantaloon-Keventer partnership outplayed others in an open bid floated by KMDA.
RSMMPL was invited to develop the complex in KMDA's PPP (Public-Private-Partnership format). The development started on August 22, 2008. The total area to be developed was about 1,32,000 sqft. A special purpose vehicle (SPV) was formed where both Keventer and Pantaloon enjoyed 50 percent stake each and invested nearly Rs 125 crore. KMDA handed over the property to the consortium under 99 years lease and started renovating the adjacent run-down building.
Built on a G+9 format, the building would house Mr Kishore Biyani's flagship Big Bazaar over five floors, from ground to fourth. The top four floors of the complex will be offered as office spaces. Talks are on with some major corporate houses who are willing to buy commercial space from RSMMPL.
This is truly an unprecedented effort on behalf of The Keventer Group and KMDA, since no other busy station complex across the country has seen anything of this scale in the past. The Sealdah Commercial Complex would witness facilities like underground car parking, roof top restaurants, spa and swimming pool. Nearly 250 cars can safely be accommodated in the underground car parking facility.
This project is truly more like a gift, customized for the residents of Sealdah and its adjacent areas!
Sealdah station is considered as one of the most significant and busy railway stations, second only to Howrah Station, that serves the city of Kolkata (Calcutta) in India. Sealdah station has its prominence primarily as a suburban local train terminal. The station broadly has 2 sections namely Sealdah Main and Sealdah South. These two sections are completely separate from each other in terms of physical space and train routes.
The Southern Section sees local trains running between Kolkata Station and Diamond Harbour, Budgebudge, Canning, Lakshmikantapur among others. The Bongaon division of Sealdah operates trains for Birati, Madhyamgram, Hridaypur, Barasat, Duttapukur, Habra, Gobardanga, Bongaon, and others, while the main section of Sealdah station operates trains between Kolkata and Barrackpore, Naihati, Kalyani, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, besides others.
Apart from local trains, Sealdah Station also offers the long distance passenger a frequent network of rail services. Hill stations like Darjeeling can be reached by the Darjeeling Mail that finds its terminal at Sealdah Station. Premium trains like the Rajdhani Express, running between Sealdah and New Delhi also originate from this station. The main section of the Seaidah station comprises some sub sections like, Barasat Section, Dankuni Section, Naihati Section. All these sections are bifurcated from the Dum Dum Station. The Barasat Section further has two sub-sections namely Bongaon line and Hasnabad line while the Naihati Section splits into two sections namely, Bandel section and Gede section. The Sealdah South Section too has its sub sections in Budge Budge Section, Canning Line, Baruipur Section, Diamond Harbour line and Kakdwip Line.
Sealdah can arguably be considered as one of the pivotal junctures of confluence for people across all regions. The new commercial project comes with the objective of uplifting the face of Sealdah in general and catering to the needs of these thousands in specific.
Fashion for a cause!
Kolkata, 21st February 2010: On Sunday evening all eyes were on India International Mega Trade Fair where Agnimitra Paul showed her Spring Summer Collection at "Earth Couture"—a jute fashion show organized by Jute Manufactures Development Council, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Vocal maestro Rashid Khan hogged the limelight with his presence as a show-stopper for the first time.
From formal to avant garde, classic to futuristic, Agnimitra's offering encompassed everything. The modernity and elegance of Agnimitra Paul's designs has catapulted her to the league of best Indian style-ambassadors in the international fashion fraternity. Kolkata's top models from the Kolkata fashion scene like Jessica, Neeraj, Madhabilata, Preeti and Suchira walked the ramp in her collection. The patterns, layers and colors of the designs accentuated the inherent qualities of the jute fabrics. While a segment of the collection boasted the natural color of the fabric, some were steeped in exuberant pastel hues. The texturization varied from the strictly minimalistic to gorgeous machine embroidery and appliqué.
The jute industry, despite its potential, has suffered due to the common perception that jute is only used to make sacking. This is only a fragment of the diverse spectrum of jute products. Today, jute is popular around the globe not only for its strength and versatility but primarily for its eco-friendly qualities. In the lifestyle segment alone, jute is used for products from designer apparel and accessories (bags, belts, jewellery, footwear) to soft furnishings and wall hangings. Jute is bringing about a revolution in the fashion industry.
Fashion designers today are creating great designs with this indigenous raw material. In fact the best of Indian haute couture is being crafted from it. The European fashion industry is also waking up to the possibility of using jute in apparel designing. Even a decade ago, the use of jute was restricted to the making of mundane objects. But now it has become an essential part of avant garde fashion.
JMDC experimented with a new idea at the Chennai Jute Festival last week, where the versatile virtuoso Shankar Mahadevan performed during a fashion show. They have now brought this concept to Kolkata with a live performance by Kolkata's very own Chandrabindoo. Models strutted on the ramp to the music and beats of Chandrabindoo's Bangla rock numbers from the plaintive to the satirical, as music and fashion complemented each other. The band members also wore on stage jute outfits designed by Agnimitra. During the performance, the band also took time out to share interesting snippets of information about jute and its uses in applications as diverse as road-building and automobile panels to carpets and works of art. The recurring theme of the evening was the bio-degradibility and eco-friendliness of jute products.
About JMDC: Jute Manufactures Development Council is a statutory body under the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, entrusted with the responsibility of promoting jute through the development of jute products, processes and markets.
An Ode to Shanghai Street Food!!!
Kolkata, 9th January, 2010: Street food could be dodgy unless you have that specially endowed intestinal immunity to endure its aftermath. But at Shanghai, which epitomizes the birthplace of street food culture, you can vouch for its cleanliness. Combing Shanghai's alleyways and far-flung streets, The Wall has organized a never-before "Shanghai Street Food Festival" coinciding with the "Chinese New Year"
The festival kicked off today in the carnivalesque atmosphere preceding the Chinese New Year. The popularity of Chinese cuisine in Kolkata dates back several decades, mainly because of its ability to adapt with local gastronomical habits. But for a considerable period of time Kolkatans would go weak at the knees by the very mention of "Chinese Fried Rice" and "Chilly Chicken"—so much so that they almost became a household name. With the gustatory revolution, Kolkatans have evolved as gourmets—the peculiarities of the eight culinary traditions prevalent in China have entered our palates!
The festival features a palette of trademark Shanghai Street delicacies. As one whisks through the authentic Shanghai ambience, a heady mishmash of aromas takes control of the senses. The Sagoo Sai Kai (authentic chicken dumpling with Sagoo), Xiao Long Bao (honey pork steam buns) and Chicken Rice Soup in the starter section will irresistibly whet the appetite of the food connoisseurs. In the main course too, culinary specialties peculiar to the Shanghai have a lion's share of the presence—with the delectable Bar be queue Shanghai Prawn, Sauté Mandarin Fish with Rice Sticks, Whole Smoked Chicken and Steam Fish Roll with Vegge.
Vegetarians, too have toothsome options like Vegetable Steam Roll and Mixed Vegetable in Apple Sauce to choose from.
Usha Martin Education & Solutions forays into School Management
Kolkata, 5th February: Nation building through learning – Usha Martin Education & Solutions Limited (UMESL) has forayed into providing standardized end-to-end solutions and school management services to enable the creation of a national network of high quality English medium K-12 schools with a focus on non-metro and tier II cities. As another step towards it, UMESL announced the launch of their services for one School in Durgapur today.
By March 2010, UMESL plans to enable at least 15 select schools from West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar with its end-to-end state-of–the-art solutions and school management services. For this, UMESL has partnered in identified areas and will soon launch its enabling services. The target is to have around 200 schools within our network in the next 7 years. Pearson, the global education and Media Company, will partner with UMESL as the primary service provider for instructional support, including curriculum and content, assessment, teacher training and support and enterprise and learning management systems.
The UMESL decision to enable schools in non-metro and Tier II cities like Durgapur finds roots in the results of a needs assessment market survey indicating that the parents of children in non-metros are far too often starved for choices in searching for high quality English medium schools for their children.
The aim of the network is to bring consistently high quality education within the reach of a large cross-section of the population. To achieve quality, key features of the UMESL education delivery model include child-centric learning through acclaimed and effective pedagogic methods, researched curriculum, standardized lesson-plan based teaching, ICT-enabled classrooms, continuous in-service teacher training and strict and process-driven quality control mechanisms.
The venture is a differentiating collaboration between two global businesses, Usha Martin Group and Pearson Education, India.
The Usha Martin group, a Rs. 4700 crore conglomerate with interests in wire ropes, steel, mines, communication software, mobile value added services, infrastructure development and media, also brings with it the experience of successfully running graduate and post-graduate management and IT training programmes through UMESL's Usha Martin Academy training institutes and communication technology anchored in Ushacomm.
With Pearson, a world leader in education publishing, the UMESL enabled schools will have the advantage of accessing their rich digital and non-digital K-12 contents like books, worksheets, assessment tools and resources for teachers as well as their state-of-the-art ERP software for school systems.
Pearson's programs are expected to offer the most comprehensive range of educational content, in all subjects from kindergarten through higher education and on into professional life.
Experts in school systems management and educationists with wide national and international experiences have conceptualized the curriculum and school systems design to be offered by UMESL ensuring reflection of learning and achievements compared to the of top school systems across the globe.
"Our approach is first and foremost child-centric – building on what children can do, rather than focusing on what they cannot do. So baseline assessments of each child will be conducted to assess every element of their learning readiness. The curriculum has been designed keeping in mind multi intelligence development which will foster holistic education and support in children's cognitive, emotional and social development. This, we think, will make students ready to face the future confidently and successfully," states Mr. Raju Babu Sinha, Vice President, UMESL.
UMESL enabled and managed schools will have friendly environments in which the parents and the school are partners in the child's education forming a protective circle inside which they grow strong and enjoy learning. In the process, the school will develop independent learners and questioning minds to prepare them for life in a changing world.
The UMESL teaching method includes discussion, problem solving and activity-based learning that stimulate physical, mental and spiritual development. Activity rooms to promote open learning, vibrant displays celebrating children's work, digitally enabled classrooms, class corner libraries and class rooms filled with learning resources will feature prominently in the UMESL enabled schools.
This emphasis on quality and core value in education is reflected in the selection and shaping of staff culture as well. As part of UMESL services model, experienced principals and teachers with potential of building great learning classroom are carefully selected for the schools. After joining the principals are enrolled into the "Usha Martin School Leadership Programme", the programme designed to support and guide Principals in leading and managing high performing happy schools. Internationally designed lesson plans to support teachers across the network and adapted to match the CBSE curriculum is yet another differentiating feature of UMESL School Service model.
Moreover, the culture and practice of regular- service training for teachers, in the UMESL enable schools, provides a great learning opportunity for teachers to develop themselves and get trained in the latest teaching methodologist.
In a similar vein, the quality assurance strategy also looks at consistency of school performance through the application of self-review and inspection framework.
Last but not the least being sensitive to the issues of the school fees emergency as real stress-inducers for parents, UMESL enable schools will bring forth transparency in this regard by strictly following the principle of no hidden or "capitation" fees. The UMESL enable school network will have fee ranging from Rs. 750- Rs. 1250 per month with the exact fee depending on the location of the school and which class the child is in.
Overall, the launch of school management services by UMESL in association with Pearson, addresses the need of the hour for nation-building by enabling high quality yet accessible value-for money school education across India.
Book Fair hosts the launch of Shomshuklla's book 1st offering of Bengali poems "Chulta Elomelo"
Kolkata, 31st January 2010: For many, the idea of poetry conjures up memories of endless intonations at the classrooms—a soporific routine to sail across exams. For the discerning lot, it is what poet Shomshuklla would describe as "not a conditioned, routine activity but a trigger of emotion which passes through like a lightning and needs to be penned down instantaneously."
Shomshuklla's 4th offering of poems and 1st Bengali poetry collection from her oeuvre, "Chulta Elomelo", presents a tapestry of life, its moorings and nature in all their splendor and candor. In a glitzy evening at Kolkata Book Fair attended by celebrated author Shankar, the book was launched.
Born in Kolkata, as a child Shomshuklla was indoctrinated with the intellectual discourses that typifies the city. As a part of that legacy she made her mark in singing and dancing before migrating to Mumbai. Her creative ferment inspired her to use different outlets for self-expression—poetry, plays and music. The critics waxed eloquent on her earlier books—I Have Seen That Face Before, Close Every Door and Seconds Before Sunrise.
While the pedant may quibble over definitions, Shomshuklla doesn't follow the austerities as she freely mixes forms, styles to spawn verses which are refreshingly original. In her latest collection she has discarded the haiku form in some cases to experiment with the prose form.
The evening was marked by impassioned narrations by the poet herself. The amorous undertones in "Chulta Elomelo", the indelibility of memories in "Anubhuti" and the perennial questions surrounding love in "Kshanik" came alive as the varying cadences of her voice dabbled with a gamut of emotions. Somshuklla weaves magic in "Kak" transforming a seemingly prosaic subject with the radiance of reflection. Inspired by Fashion Designer Sharbari Dutta, the poem "Khoja" embarks on eternal self-exploration. Poems like "Dnarao" and "Chitrangada" stand out by the sheer uniqueness of the ideas. What is remarkable about the book is the tapestry of illustrations designed and stylized by painter Shuvaprasanna's wife Ms. Shipra Bhattacharya.
Shomshuklla's talent becomes evident when somebody like Sunil Gangopadhyay speaks effusively about her, "Shomshuklla is a very imaginative poet and has distinct style of writing. With bold language, simple but soul-searching messages, passion for love, short but meaningful poetry…seems to me always significant."

A Date with Kings and Nawabs---by the seashore
Kolkata, 25th January 2010: You thought only the khansamas from the Royal Kitchens of Lucknow had the savoir faire for preparing the best kebabs? Always a classic example of Mughlai cuisine, these enticingly succulent kebabs have been redefined by Charcoal Grill to add the distinct Indian Coastal flavor! This delightful mix of North Indian and Coastal food was showcased at a Special Preview on the inaugural day of Badshahi Khazana—Samundari Kebab & Biryani Festival.
Stretching from the southern fringes of Bengal in the East, the Indian coastline girdles up the Southern and Western parts of the subcontinent. The cuisines have eclectic regional diversities with Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala falling under the periphery. But a distorted perception equates the much-touted Goan food with Indian Coastal food. Charcoal Grill ripped this concept asunder by bringing in the diversity of Indian Coastal food in Kolkata. And now with this festival of Coastal kebabs, it has merged two mutually exclusive culinary traditions.
The delectable spread includes delicacies like Beckti Kesari Kebab, Prawn Malai Kebab, Stuffed Squid Banjara Kebab, Shah Jahani Seafood Shammi Kebab, Tandoori Kebab, Pomfret Hariyali Kebab, Gosht Boti Kebab, Murgh Cheese Kebab.
The restaurant always offers a fair share for the vegetarians too. This time too it has lined up an array of Special Kebab for the vegetarians. The chef recommends Subz Shammi Kebab, Stuffed Aloo Banjara Kebab and Tandoori Cottage Cheese.
"I am a total foodie and for my kitty party friends Charcoal Grill has always been a favorite haunt! This time they are showcasing some of the rarest sea-food kebabs, which I think is a totally new concept. I'm pretty sure that the festival would be a smashit. What more—you get free Kingfisher and Nine Hills wine too with the kebabs!!! Truly Kolkata hasn't witnessed a gala food festival like this in the recent past", gushed a visitor.
P. C. Sorcar's daughters Maneka and Mumtaz attended the inaugural press conference.
New name of Tata Ryerson
Tata Ryerson Limited was set up in 1997 as a joint venture company with equal equity stake from both the promoters i.e. Tata Steel of India and Ryerson Tull of USA. The purpose was to bring steel service center solutions to industrial customers in India. Tata Steel is the largest private sector steel producer and one of the major global producers of steel and Ryerson Tull is the largest distributor of industrial materials having over 100 service centres across USA, Canada , China with a turnover of around 6 Billion USD.
In the second half of 2007, Ryerson Inc was acquired by Platinum Equity, a private equity firm specializing in the merger, acquisition and operation of companies. Subsequent to this development, the management of Ryerson Inc decided to sell their equity stake to Tata Steel through a cordial process of negotiation and mutual agreement. While the sale of equity of Ryerson Inc to Tata Steel was completed in July 2009, Tata Ryerson formally came to be known as Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited (TSPDL) in January 2010.
Tata Steel and TSPDL – a perfect synergy and partnership
TSPDL has been partnering with Tata Steel in delivering the best product and service quality to reputed OEMs in India such as Tata Motors, TVS, Ashok Leyland, Toyota, Ford, Hyundai, Honda , Maruti , Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Bajaj etc. TSPDL provides uninterrupted just- in- time supplies of right quality steel of desired sizes which creates significant reduction in the supply chain costs, inventory holding and pre production processing costs at the customers' end.
Thus Tata Steel has always seen a lot of value in TSPDL, short as well as long term. Over one million tonne of flat steel product of Tata Steel (both hot rolled and cold rolled coated and uncoated) is processed through the nationwide network of TSPDL's Service Centres.
TSPDL fits perfectly in Tata Steel's strategy of providing quality customised steel as per specific customer requirements. TSPDL enables Tata Steel to bridge the gap between mill production lots and customer requirement for small lot deliveries in customised sizes and shapes.
Growth story of TSPDL
TSPDL is the largest organized steel service centre in the country with a revenue of Rs 1300 crores and having a compounded annual growth rate of more than 50% over the last 5 years. It employs over 1300 people who are guided by the company's Mission to be a trusted and irreplaceable bridge between steel producers and consumers and the underlying Core values of Credibility, Customer Focus, Continuous Improvement, Agility and Teamwork
Starting in 1997 with a service centre in Jamshedpur and a turnover of INR 1.8 cr, it has now spread across India with 7 service centres and 16 distribution locations. With a combined processing and distribution volume of over 1.3 million metric tons, it is poised to cross a turnover of INR 1500 cr in 10-11.
Headquartered in Kolkata, TSPDL's sophisticated processing facilities (Hot Rolled, Cold Rolled – both coated and uncoated, SS and Rebar) are located in Jamshedpur, Pune and Faridabad, Pantnagar and Tada. It pioneered processing of auto grade steel for car skin panels and construction grade Rebar in India.
World class processing facilities and comprehensive quality assurance systems combine to make TSPDL an undisputed leader in the Indian service center industry. The Plants have been awarded ISO9001, 9002-1994 and QS9000 and TS16949 quality system certifications. It has also received the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award for large scale service centre for the year 2007. Operations are integrated using SAP R/3 platform which provides real time data for customers.
Latest Steel Service Centre at Pantnagar
In last couple of years, the picturesque state of Uttarakhand (erstwhile Uttaranchal) has witnessed an investment boom in the manufacturing sector. While consumer durables and non durable industries have set up their units both in Kumaon and Garhwal regions, auto majors and tractor makers have invested in greenfield manufacturing facilities. Thus we see Mahindra 3- wheelers, Hero Honda, Videocon in Garhwal and Bajaj, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra Tractors and Tata Motors in and around Pantnagar in Kumaon region. There OEMs bought their Tier I and II vendors to Pantnagar as part of their manufacturing strategy.
As need for an advanced level Steel Service Centre was felt by the OEMs and the vendors, TSPDL came forward to set up their 7th service centre in Pantnagar adjacent to Tata Motors and other OEMs. Thus TSPDL continues its journey towards fulfilment of its Mission.
Latest initiatives in value added stage II processing
As a part of its continuous effort to work closely with customers and provide more value to them, TSPDL set up an advanced level Plate Processing and Fabrication Centre in Tada (Andhra Pradesh) near Chennai aiming to cater to the specialized demand from Earthmoving and Construction Equipment sector. Thus a customer in ECE segment can expect comprehensive range of services for Plates from TSPDL Service Centre for Plate Burning and Fabrication.
Partnering Nano
TSPDL is already supplying special roll formed and stretched bent components for Tata Motor's prestigious Nano project from its Pantnagar Plant. Plans have already been firmed up facilities at Sanand in the vendor park of Tata Motors
Future Outlook
Tata Steel is committed to expand its steel production capacity in Jamshedpur from present level of 6 million to 10 million tonne by 2012. A substantial volume from this additional production would require to be processed through TSPDL facilities. TSPDL and Tata Steel are in active stage of finalising equipment for 2.4 million tonne additional rolling capacity (TSCR). This would entail an investment of over Rs 500 crores.
The new investment would be in advanced level processing of high strength steel and skin panels for new generation automobiles.
Corus which is now part of Tata Steel Group has similar steel service centre operations in UK and EU. It is natural that TSPDL and Corus Steel Service Centres would share their learning for mutual benefit and stay ahead of competition
Two new bikes from Vibgyor Vehicles give international brands a run for their money!
New Delhi, 6th January 2009: Bike-evangelists could well chronicle a story on Gallop's meteoric rise to fame; such was the unanimous verdict of the people. Now with the 125 cc Hunter and 150 cc Shark, Vibgyor Vehicles will be rewriting history! The two speedsters were recently unveiled at the 10th Delhi Auto Expo at glitzy launch attended by none-other-than their brand ambassador Sourav Ganguly.
125 cc "Hunter" on the other hand exudes a rare classicism with its two color options—red and black. The installed digital clock speedometer and the digital gear indicators place the model at par with international brands.

Successive launches of 100 cc "Persona", utility scooters and 200 cc bikes are in the pipeline. Now that the dealership network has expanded manifold across India, the production volume has increased likewise. Moreover consignments have been shipped to Bangladesh and talks are on with dealers in Nepal too. Even the far-flung areas of Africa are being targeted for gaining strongholds there. To manage these escalating operations, Vibgyor has acquired 35 bighas of land at Dankuni for construction of its second factory.
